What Types of Parasols Are Available for Events?
Not all parasols are suitable for events. Beach parasols are too small, too light and visually out of place at a wedding or corporate reception. For events, you need large-format commercial parasols — specifically designed for extended outdoor use, with weighted bases for stability, UV50+ canopies and commercial-grade mechanisms.
The key distinction is between centre-pole and cantilever parasols. Within those two categories, you choose the diameter. Here's everything you need to know:
3m Parasols
The most compact large-format option. Covers a single standard dining table (round, diameter 1.5–1.8m) comfortably. Best for events where tables are spread across the space with some natural gaps between them.
4m Parasols
The most versatile size. Covers a larger dining table or a cocktail cluster. Available in both centre-pole and cantilever configurations. The most frequently hired size at Spot Eventos.
5m Parasols
Our largest model. Cantilever only — at this diameter, a centre pole would be impractical. Can cover two adjacent dining tables or a large lounge area. The premium choice for luxury weddings and high-end corporate events.
What Is the Ideal Diameter for My Event?
The right diameter depends on three factors: the size of the area you need to shade, the type of furniture underneath, and the visual aesthetic you want to achieve.
For individual dining tables
A 3m parasol is sufficient for most standard event tables (up to 8 seats, round table ~1.6m diameter). A 4m parasol provides more generous shade and better visual impact.
For cocktail areas
A single 4m or 5m cantilever parasol covers a cluster of high tables for 10–15 standing guests. Multiple units can be positioned to create a cohesive shaded zone.
For lounge seating areas
A 5m cantilever is the best choice — the wide canopy covers a full lounge setup (sofa, armchairs, coffee table) without any obstruction. Highly photogenic.
For ceremony or presentation areas
A 5m cantilever positioned at the side can provide shade to a ceremony spot or a small stage without the pole interrupting sightlines.
Cantilever vs. Centre-Pole: Which Should You Choose?
This is the most important configuration decision. Here's the practical breakdown:
Centre-Pole
- ✓ More economical
- ✓ Excellent stability
- ✓ Works well for individual dining tables
- ✗ Pole obstructs the centre of the covered area
- ✗ Guests must navigate around it
- ✗ Not ideal for lounge or cocktail setups
Cantilever Recommended
- ✓ Space underneath completely free
- ✓ Can be rotated 360° to track the sun
- ✓ Works for any event setup
- ✓ Preferred for weddings and luxury events
- ✓ More photogenic — nothing interrupts the visual
- ✗ Slightly higher cost per unit
For most weddings and premium corporate events, we recommend cantilever. For casual outdoor events where cost is a priority, centre-pole at 3m or 4m is a practical choice.
How Many Parasols Do You Need?
The number of parasols depends on your event layout and how much of the space you want to shade. Here are the general rules we use:
Seated dinner (tables of 8)
1 × 3m per table, or 1 × 4m per table for more generous coverage
Seated dinner (tables of 10–12)
1 × 4m per table, or 1 × 5m cantilever per 2 adjacent tables
Cocktail / standing
1 × 5m cantilever per 15–20 guests in a cluster
Mixed (dining + lounge)
Calculate each zone separately and add 1 extra for buffer coverage

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between a cantilever and a centre-pole parasol?
- A cantilever parasol has a side or rear arm — the pole is not in the centre, leaving the space underneath completely clear. A centre-pole parasol has the mast in the middle, which can obstruct movement and views.
- How many parasols do I need for 100 guests?
- For a seated dinner with tables of 10 using 4m parasols, you'll need 8–10 units. For lounge or cocktail areas, coverage needs are lower. We provide a custom layout proposal based on your venue plan.
- What sizes of parasols does Spot Eventos have for hire?
- We offer parasols from 3m to 5m in diameter. All are large-format models with UV50+ protection, 360° rotation and weighted base included.
